Outdoor Survival Skills Series with Joe Brandl

Build real-world outdoor skills in this immersive 11-class survival series taught by seasoned outdoor educator and survivalist Joe Brandl, featured on Naked and Afraid and known for his deep wilderness knowledge and engaging instruction. Designed for adventurers, outdoor workers, and curious learners, this hands-on program covers essential survival techniques using natural and minimal gear.

You’ll gain confidence in fire-starting, shelter-building, navigation, first aid, outdoor cooking, foraging, water purification, tool-making, and more. Each class offers practical, field-tested strategies that help you thrive in the outdoors—whether you're exploring the backcountry or preparing for emergencies.

Class Topics Include:

  • Fire Starting Mastery (Sept 10 & 11): Flint, steel, bow drill, and emergency methods.
  • Ropes, Knots & Lashings (Sept 17 & 18): Learn foundational and advanced knots and apply them in shelter-building.
  • Water Sourcing & Purification (Sept 24): Hands-on water safety, purification, and DIY filter-making.
  • Wilderness Navigation (Oct 1): Use maps, compass, and celestial cues. Includes a field navigation challenge.
  • Tracking & Awareness (Oct 8): Explore animal signs and enhance situational awareness.
  • Tool & Camp Gadget Building (Oct 15 & 16): Craft spoons, digging sticks, and practical gear from natural materials.
  • Wilderness First Aid (Oct 22): Treat injuries and practice emergency scenarios in remote settings.
  • Outdoor Cooking (Oct 29 & 30): Master open-flame cooking and share a meal made from foraged and packed ingredients.
  • Tarp Shelter Building (Nov 4 & 5): Build and evaluate weather-ready shelters using minimal gear.
  • Dressing for the Outdoors (Nov 12): Learn smart layering, clothing selection, and gear maintenance.
  • Snowshoes from Natural Materials (Nov 19): Build and test functional snowshoes made from found materials.

Joe Brandl

Joe Brandl

Joe Brandl is a seasoned outdoor educator, survivalist, and historian with decades of experience in wilderness skills, Scouting leadership, and historical interpretation. He has lived and worked in some of the most remote regions of the American West, including the Gros Ventre Wilderness, and was featured on the international survival series Naked and Afraid.

Joe holds a degree in wildlife management and has taught outdoor education, leadership, and team-building courses for corporate groups, dude ranches, and Scouting organizations.

Through his business, Legacy of the Wild, Joe offers hands-on instruction in traditional survival techniques with a focus on self-reliance, character development, and respect for the natural world. Known for his authenticity, discipline, and deep knowledge of frontier life, Joe continues to inspire others through teaching, public speaking, and personal storytelling.
